Contact Me
Email
I expect to be checking emails about once a week, depending on where I am at the time. This will definitely be the best way to contact me. If you think we may be crossing paths, definitely drop me an email in advance and let's do our best to meet up! My address is khulsey [at] gmail [dot] com (slight adjustment required for spam avoidance).
Phone
I'll have a GSM mobile phone with me and will use local SIM cards. This means my phone number will be frequently changing. If you want to get in touch by phone, email me and I'll send my current phone number or send you a text message. Hope to hear from you!
Travel Links
I plan to use this space to begin to list helpful links to a lot of the places I've visited or used as resources. Hopefully these recommendations will provide useful information and offer a way to resolve some of the "difficult challenges" I've had to overcome through trial and error!
Service Projects
My search for the right match...
When considering activities, goals and meaningful ways to spend a year off the grid, I knew I wanted to get involved in a few volunteer projects. What I didn't know is what a big ethical conundrum I would uncover while doing research. "Voluntourism" is one of the latest trends in travel, offering a splash of good karma to standard holidays and a better chance to avoid the ever growing beaten path. While this trend starts from a positive place, the lasting impact on communities can actually be disastrous - meaning every initiative by good intentioned foreign hands in areas facing complicated local challenges requires sincere and thorough evaluation. Check out this page for a description of the three projects I chose with links to the sponsoring organizations and information about their goals and partners. I would encourage anyone to take the leap and be a part of projects such as these - truly a life-changing experience.
