Adjusting Aim

the issue with wandering where you're going [october 2008]. . .

Belloc quote

When considering different paths in life several years ago, a friend said, “don’t be a leaf in the water; be a salmon, swim upstream.”

Last year by taking a one year leave of absence for travel, perhaps I did that. This year, I’m back at work and ready to experience a challenging new opportunity as an expat in India. I do like expat life. But then the time comes, when a project or company demands you go. A change order is served and ready or not the surging current moves you on.

I think the correct approach is somewhere in the middle. One shouldn’t have to expend energy fighting the forces of nature. It’s there for a reason, often helping you and leading you in the right direction. Carving out ways you could not have imagined. But you can’t just dead man float. Tides change. Rocks appear and sometimes you need to paddle. I’ve always said I was born a surfer girl. I think it’s high time I buy the board.

So where does the flow lead me now? Hyderabad, India. One year, with a paycheck. Tied to real world responsibilities of course. No more mindless days stressing over the proper black gel tip pen or which general compass direction to choose (though I do intend to head straight to Udaipur to buy more perfect leather-bound journals for my new collection).

I plan to keep my little corner of cyberspace alive while I dive in to this new world. India has always fascinated and seduced me so I’m looking forward to the colorful path ahead.

Wanderlust

and the issue of wandering aimlessly [july 2007]. . .

Sure, many people go out seeking new destinations and wild adventures right after college. That appears to be the appropriate time to go for it... to identify yourself as the wandering type while delaying the real world. Well at that time, I was just finding my wings. Freedom came in the form of a move to the big city, my own apartment and a real job. Funny how ten years later, it was the same job that blew open my horizons and the that same list tying me down. That, and the idea that I didn't want to just wander aimlessly. I kept thinking I need something epic, something really big to be worth this break in my career. I've always been a little impatient and just like me, waiting gets old. Besides, epic is relative and who says setting off on some far flung adventure is wandering aimlessly. It's just a beautiful new perspective.

Well my friends, here it goes… one long-awaited leap and I'm free as a bird.

September 2007 my flight begins. I'm leaving the job, the apartment and the grind to finally take advantage of the reality that it's never too late to make it happen. And that 'it' is only a detail.

I invite you to travel with me virtually. I'll be posting pictures and journal entries, as well as travel details about itineraries and projects as they unfold. Better yet, if you feel the itch... forget the virtual stuff, check my itinerary and come out to join me somewhere in this world!
